HKEX is a great place for me to obtain a wide spectrum of exposure within a short period. I appreciate the opportunities to work with high-calibre people, who not only share their professional skills but also career advice. Exposure and interaction with senior management, despite our relative lack of experience, provides direct access for me to learn from their insights. In addition, cross-departmental collaboration enables me to build a professional network across the organisation. The MT programme is definitely a fruitful and rewarding experience which made 28 months seem much too short!

There is no better way to take a front-row seat in the securities market than by working at HKEX. The Management Trainee Programme offers me excellent exposure in key functions behind the robust Hong Kong securities market. Here, I work alongside professional teams through either participating in market initiatives or supporting daily functions. HKEX, as a market regulator and listed exchange, allows for a comprehensive view on listing and business functions.

In the Listing Division, taking part in monitoring issuers’ post-listing compliance really enriches my exposure to our frontline regulator role. I gained a deeper understanding of current market behaviour ranging from mergers and acquisitions and fundraising to financial statement reporting through interaction with colleagues in accounting and legal. Whether it is an internal intellectual discussion or external case negotiation, this technical environment has proven itself to be a unique learning ground for new joiners keen to explore the dynamics of the securities market.

Since I was a child I have always wondered how things work. I’m always excited to learn, challenge myself, and get to the bottom of answers. With that same passion, I wanted a job that brings about change and has a positive impact to the world. Therefore HKEX was my ideal destination. What makes HKEX unique is the strong emphasis on world-class standards, integrity, continuous learning, and most importantly, its dedication to be the pioneer of the world’s financial markets. By joining the MT programme, I am encouraged to take initiative, and with plenty of opportunities to work in various business functions including Markets, Listing and Market Development, I’m also challenged to experience, reflect, and share constructive dialogue with senior management along the way. Joining the MT programme has led me to the type of challenges I’m looking for. Now, I am ready to anticipate and solve complex problems, stay ahead of the market, and continue to grow at HKEX

Despite coming from a social science background with limited knowledge of Finance, I did not feel alienated at HKEX as there is no lack of support and resources for Management Trainees. The month-long orientation and training equips MTs with a holistic overview of both textbook financial knowledge and HKEX operational know-how.

My first rotation in Clearing proved to be a cornerstone for my career at HKEX. From day one I was delegated with research and project management assignments relating to major Group initiatives. I quickly became an important part of the team as I was entrusted with tasks that required coordination between different Clearing departments, and furthered my understanding of the day-to-day operations of HKEX.

Having joined HKEX for less than a year, the learning curve has been, and will likely continue to be, fairly steep. I am confident that the remainder of the programme will continue to enhance my resilience and perseverance.

HKEX is where all parties in the financial market interact with each other. The Management Trainee programme provides me with substantial exposure to different financial disciplines as well as extensive experience in dealing with market participants. The organisation offers an unprecedented opportunity for both professional and personal development through structured training, coaching and mentorship programmes.

During the rotational programme, I am often assigned to work in an area which is not my expertise and provides a steep and intellectual learning curve. Being resourceful and open-minded helps me build rapport among colleagues and best facilitates my learning and development.

I am currently in Group Credit & Quantitative Analysis Department where I am actively involved in implementing business and strategic measures in key projects and initiatives as well as analysing regulatory changes focusing on clearing and risk management. So far, the MT programme has met my expectations as I face new challenges every day and have the chance to learn with the help of very supportive supervisors. The teams at HKEX are very friendly and resourceful, and I have gradually learned how to tackle complex problems in a structured and efficient way with their support. I enjoy the working environment here; all ideas are considered, even if they come from junior employees like me and other trainees. I look forward to rotating into different divisions and participating in various initiatives at HKEX.

When I joined the Management Trainee Programme, I was given the opportunity to gain a thorough insight into the core functions of Hong Kong’s financial market. The departmental familiarisation and training provided me with comprehensive knowledge of the company’s businesses as well as the operations of Hong Kong’s financial industry. Through the departmental attachments, not only did I increase my professional knowledge, but I also developed leadership and teamwork skills which are vital to my personal career development.

In the first week of my rotation in the Market Development division, I was asked to be in charge of a system development project which involved liaising with various teams. I had to take initiative in decision making and problem solving when faced with difficulties. Despite my lack of experience, I was given responsibility and was able make a contribution to the team at the same time, which was very memorable and rewarding!

We are trained systematically both in terms of technical and soft skills from day one. My first rotation was in Group Strategy where I was exposed to different initiatives that have the potential to make a difference in the capital markets, which is very exciting! In addition, I am able to gain a comprehensive picture about the company and develop a strategic mindset. I also learned some essential technical skills in research and data analysis, as well as how to present the research professionally. I hope to continue to validate my understanding of initiatives in the company and the exchange industry, and leverage my Mainland background to help HKEX connect China with the world.

My quantitative finance background proved to be an invaluable asset to me at HKEX. The coursework I had at university prepared me well for the rigorous challenges in a work setting, particularly in terms of familiarising myself with HKEX’s wide spectrum of financial products available to investors and the sophisticated market operation happening day-to-day at the Exchange.

I am also deeply impressed by the amount of resources dedicated to all MTs during the first month’s orientation and familiarisation. It combined departmental overviews, technical and communication skills workshops as well as interactive team building activities that allowed us to develop camaraderie within our group. These activities have helped me transition smoothly from school to the workplace. Along with the on-the-job experience after formal training, we are given further social and career development opportunities to expand our professional network by taking part in the mentoring programme and attending a series of activities. The thoughtful design of this MT programme truly demonstrates that people matter at HKEX.

I joined HKEX after graduating from King's College London in 2015 and spending a year in the British Civil Service. HKEX's MT Programme has been a fantastic experience for me thus far, not only because of the multifarious roles HKEX plays in the financial market and the unique exposure it offers, but also the sheer amount of resources HKEX devotes to training and developing its employees.

I have had many unforgettable experiences within the Market Development Division so far, during which I have been given many opportunities to provide quantitative analyses and construct business narratives on different high impact projects. The speed with which I had to learn and deliver quality outputs on a timely basis has been especially challenging, but nonetheless rewarding. Every day within HKEX feels like a new day with new opportunities to learn new skills and further develop my career.

I grew up in Beijing and studied politics and economics at Brandeis University in the United States. My cultural background has proven helpful when it comes to communicating with our Mainland counterparts, and my academic training enables me to critically analyse macroeconomic and political issues which are pertinent to HKEX’s businesses.
The MT programme at HKEX has been a rewarding experience for me so far. The comprehensive training programme helped me gain a good understanding of the business scope and the responsibilities of HKEX, and I believe my perspective will be broadened after finishing the rotations in divisions across the company. Furthermore, the friendship and connections with my fellow MTs have blossomed since we began the programme, which is something I had never imagined before joining. In the following two years, I believe my future rotations will be as interesting and rewarding as my first one, and wish I can continue to contribute effectively and acquire unique experience from each one of them.

After joining the Exchange, I was immediately captivated by its growing business opportunities and China connectivity initiatives, which not only adds tremendous growth opportunities to the company, but also reshapes the market landscape. I decided this is where I could learn the most at the start of my career – both market and professional knowledge.

The exposure as a front-line regulator is what I like most about my attachment in Compliance & Monitoring in the Listing Department. There is no other place where I can gain exposure to various issuers within such a short period of time, nor would there be another place where I could work on cases that might lead to policy changes in the market. The Listing Committee meeting is the very best venue to experience the intricacy of the design and the application of the Listing Rules.

I have always been motivated to make a difference. At HKEX, I was able to be part of the process to shape the market development, and was included in strategic initiatives such as the LME acquisition and expansion into the fixed income and currency space. As a management trainee, you will have to master the details of certain subjects and go the extra mile. I have also enjoyed the mentorship programme, where thoughtful sharing often inspired me and helped frame my view of the world.

The 28-month programme provides significant exposure and substantial opportunities for learning and career growth. I am able to work with highly intellectual individuals and get a glimpse of how they tackle challenging problems.

I had an unforgettable experience during the first week of my second rotation at Derivatives Clearing Operations when I was presented with the opportunity to take part in a brainstorming session and design process for a major project with LME. The recognition from the team was satisfying and it was a pleasant surprise to know that my ideas were equally valued despite my relative lack of experience in the team. Being able to make a difference is now the fuel I burn on when faced with challenging times at HKEX. Hard work pays off!

I have been given more duties and responsibilities since graduation, which is both exciting and challenging. The wide exposure and well-rounded skill set gained from the MT programme enabled me to handle complex tasks in a more structured and efficient way. The 28-month programme allowed me to adjust my career path and identify the best way to achieve my career goals.

In Group Strategy, we often collaborate with different business units across the firm to develop new initiatives. Moving into this role was a natural transition for me because the Management Trainee Programme equipped me with a thorough understanding of the key business areas through its department rotations. Along the way, I have also fostered great relationships with colleagues – which are extremely helpful when you are only one phone call away from the subject experts.

As a Management Trainee in Group Strategy, my typical day will usually be related to business planning which consists of market research and stakeholder engagement. As the development of new initiatives or strategies often requires deep understanding of the market, trainees are exposed to senior management internally and externally where they can learn from their years of experience. At the end of the day, not every idea will be implemented but it is a challenging and dynamic process which I truly enjoy.
