Women's Exchange at HKEX

The Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) Womens Exchange (WE) is a staff initiated network of women and men who work together with the goal of increasing the role of women in the decision-making process and leadership within HKEX Group.  WE aims to encourage a female-friendly working environment, increase the connectivity and the retention of women at HKEX, support the development of a network of HKEXs clients and stakeholders who believe gender equality is important, promote the development of policies and programmes within the company that support women in leadership roles, and engage men and women together to achieve these aims.  WE also encourages the creation of community outreach programmes that connect HKEX staff with the companys female clients and which further womens issues through HKEXs corporate social responsibility agenda.  


Recent Events Highlights:

  • 15 November 2018  Celebrating Women in the Workplace

HKEX Women's Exchange co-hosted the second "Celebrating Women in the Workplace" event with AIG at HKEX Connect Hall on 15 November.  This year's event attracted close to 300 participants and raised HK$86,000 from ticket sales to help The Women's Foundation Financial Literacy Programme.

Vanessa Lau, HKEX Chief Financial Officer (Hong Kong), gave opening remarks. "Here at HKEX, we are very proud to say that diversity in the workplace is a core focus for us," she said. "We believe that skills drawn from across gender, background, nationality and experience are essential for business success.  We aspire to be champions of diversity for our own benefit as well as setting an example to the 2000 or so companies listed on our markets."

Keynote speakers and panelists from across eight different industries shared their views and anecdotes on a number of topics – including how to find one's authentic self at work, breaking through the glass ceiling, adapting to the ever-changing environment after returning from career breaks, and why diversity makes business sense.  The strong presence of senior male executives on stage highlighted one of the event's goals -- that diversity should be embraced by action and held up to as a value in any firm's corporate culture.

  • 19 March 2018  Internal Speaker Series - Secret for Success

On 19 March 2018, the second WE Internal Speaker Series was held at the HKEX Connect Hall Boardroom featuring three HKEX female executives including Garbo Cheung (Managing Director and Head of Market Surveillance and Monitoring, Markets Division), Patricia Cheung (Senior Vice President at Treasury, Finance Division) and Hilda Lai (Senior Vice President and Senior Counsel at Legal, Legal and Regulatory Compliance Division). The theme of the lunch seminar was “Secrets to Success”. The speakers candidly shared their thoughts on women's empowerment, measures of success, and how to remove gender stereotypes in the workplace, both in the male and female context. The event was well received by internal staff members and the WE committee will roll out a similar internal sharing session soon.

Ring the Bell Gong Hitting

Women's Exchange joined 59 stock exchanges around the world to celebrate International Women's Day and support the #PressforProgress campaign. Based on the theme "Diversity Makes $ense", the event promoted the idea that a greater share of women in the workplace could lead to better financial performance in companies.

  • 6 March 2018  HeforShe

HeforShe CharlesHefoeShe Panel

HeforShe is a United Nations initiative aiming to engage men to take action against inequalities faced by women. HKEX co-hosted the event with the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. More than 500 people turned up and were treated to speeches and a panel discussion.
